Which NSW trail races are ultras?

An ultramarathon is any distance longer than 42.195km, according to World Athletics. In NSW that includes the Six Foot Track Marathon (45km), the 50km at Lithgow, the Mt Solitary Ultra (45km, with 2,515m of climbing) and the UTA50, UTA100 and UTAMiler. We have guides to the Six Foot Track and Ultra-Trail Australia.

What about Lithgow?

The Lithgow Ridgy-Didge Trail Run Festival, run by Blue Mountains Fitness, has the most distances on this list. The 50km starts at 7am, has 2,400m to 2,500m of climbing and descent (the entry page gives both figures) and costs $243 at the standard rate, and the marathon is 42.2km with over 2,000m of gain. The cut-off for all races is 7pm, and any runner passing checkpoint 12 (40km on the 50km course) after 4:30pm must carry a headlamp. The 5km and 10km make it a way in for runners who are not ready for an ultra. All of this is on the festival entry page.

Which NSW races run in spring?

Three more NSW races ran, or run, in spring 2026, and we found no 2027 dates for them on 4 October 2026:

What about trail races in Sydney itself?

The Sydney Trail Series, run by Nourished Lifestyle Co, describes itself as Sydney's original trail running series. Its spring series at St Ives has two races left, on 11 October and 8 November 2026, with 7km, 10km and 24km courses (plus a 30km on 8 November). No summer 2027 dates were published on 4 October 2026. See our guide to the best trail runs in Sydney for places to train.

How do you prepare for a trail race?

Rehearse the terrain: climbs, descents and your fuelling plan. Our first ultra training guide covers the evidence for longer races, and the trail running for beginners guide covers the move from road to trail.

Inspired? Run the Blue Mountains with a crew

If you want the Blue Mountains without a start line, we are building a four-day trip there: one house near Katoomba and Wentworth Falls, a different run each day and no timing chips. Dates are to be confirmed and the price is an estimate of about $1,650 per person. Booking is not open yet, so register your interest and we will contact you first.
