What Is a Running Retreat?

A running retreat is a multi-day trip built around running—not as the afterthought, but as the main event.

You escape the usual routes, the usual routine, the usual everything. For three or four days, running is the structure. You wake, you run somewhere worth running, you recover, you connect with other runners who get it.

OUTRN running retreats take place in Australia's most iconic landscapes: Uluru, Blue Mountains, and destinations we're adding. Small groups. Quality accommodation. Trails that make the early alarm worth it.

No racing. No training plans. No forced fun. Just the kind of reset that actually resets.

How OUTRN Retreats Work

The Running

Each retreat includes 3-4 guided runs in the destination. Typical daily distances range from 8-15km, with terrain varying by location. You're not being timed. You're not competing. Run your pace, take photos, soak it in.

The Recovery

We build in downtime. Post-run stretching, pool time, quality meals, and experiences that complement the running—cultural tours, local food, sunsets worth staying up for.

The Crew

Groups are capped at 12-16 runners. Most people arrive solo. By day two, you'll know everyone's story. By departure, you'll have a crew you didn't expect.

The Logistics

We handle everything: accommodation, meals, transport, park fees, hydration on trail, local guides. You fly in with your running shoes. We take care of the rest.

Current Running Retreats

Uluru Running Retreat 4 days | ~30km running

The Red Centre. Sunrise at the base of a 550-million-year-old rock. Kata Tjuta valley trails. Field of Light under outback stars. Sounds of Silence dinner in the desert.

This is the retreat that started OUTRN, and still the one that hits differently.

Take me to the Uluru Trip

Blue Mountains Running Retreat 3 days | ~25km running | Coming 2026

Sandstone ridgelines. Rainforest descents. Grand Canyon loop. An hour from Sydney, but it feels like another world.

Our Blue Mountains retreat will include escarpment runs, valley trails, and a brewery finish that's earned.

Who Running Retreats Are For

If you've ever stared at your usual 5km loop and thought "there has to be more than this", a running retreat is the answer.

You Might Be

A runner who wants more than a race medal Someone whose run club is their primary social circle A solo traveller who prefers running with strangers over sitting on a tour bus Anyone who's thought "I need a reset" and meant it

You should be:

Comfortable running 10-15km on consecutive days Fine with early mornings (sunrise runs are the highlight) Open to running with a group of different paces

You don't need to be:

Fast (no pace tracking, no competition) An experienced trail runner (most terrain is accessible) Travelling with someone (most runners come solo)

Running Retreats vs Other Options

Running Retreat (OUTRN): Multi-day trip with group runs, recovery, and experiences. Best for runners wanting adventure + community.

Running Camp: Training-focused, often with coaching. Best for runners wanting structured improvement.

Race-cation: Travel to a destination race. Best for runners wanting a competition goal.

Self-planned running trip: DIY logistics to a running destination. Best for runners who enjoy planning.

OUTRN retreats sit in the adventure + community space. We're not a training camp. We're not a race. We're the running trip you'd plan for yourself if you had the time, the local knowledge, and someone to handle the logistics.

Why Australia for a Running Retreat?

Iconic landscapes. Uluru, Blue Mountains, Great Ocean Road—these are world-famous destinations that happen to have world-class running. Most tourists see them from viewing platforms. You'll see them on foot.

Perfect conditions. The southern hemisphere seasons mean May through September offers ideal running weather while the northern hemisphere is in summer. Cool mornings, warm days, dry conditions.

Accessible remoteness. Australia combines genuine wilderness with straightforward logistics. Direct flights, safe trails, English-speaking guides. The adventure without the expedition complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a running retreat different from a running holiday?

They're similar, we use both terms. "Retreat" emphasises the escape-and-reset aspect; "holiday" emphasises the travel-and-adventure aspect. Same trips, different framing

Do I need to be fast for a running retreat?

No. We don't track pace. Runners naturally spread out based on their comfort level, and we have support at multiple points.

What's the accommodation like on running retreats?

We book 3-4 star hotels or lodges, comfortable, clean, well-located. No hostels. No camping unless specifically included as an experience.

Can my run club book a private running retreat?

Yes. We run private retreats for groups of 12+. Contact us to discuss dates and destinations.
